One Night Stay Review
Please keep pairing LeToya Luckett and Stephen C. Bishop together. I beg of you all.
Bet+ started the new year with their new film, One Night Stay. It is a suspenseful thriller with a stacked cast consisting of Letoya Luckett, Stephen C. Bishop, MC Lyte, and Essence Atkins. Now, during my bout of insomnia, I watched the movie within a few hours of the film's release on Bet+, so I will let loose a few spoilers while also giving my feedback.
For background purposes, the film’s synopsis is about a completely wrong one-night stand. Stephen C. Bishop’s character, Marcus, sleeps with Iyana Halley’s character, Jessica. This happens after it is revealed that Milia (Luckett) has to spend more time at work. Of course, Jessica and Marcus have their one-night stand, and in the morning, Marcus insists that he is still a married man. While he appreciates the time he has to return to being married, Instead of grabbing her things and doing the walk of shame, Jessica stays in the house. Did I mention that the house is vast, and she stays in the storage room? Keep that in mind.
As the film unfolds, we learn that Marcus and Milia have a very toxic relationship, with good reason. While there must have been love, it seems as though it is gone because Marcus resents Milia for being able to provide for the both of them and pay for everything ever since Marcus got injured, and his vice became gambling on games. While that shouldn’t be resentful, it is also Milia’s prominent comeback. She consistently throws it in his face that he can’t provide for the both of them (She was eating his ass up, though). So, while the couple has cute rare moments, it is replaced with Milia cussing out Marcus (As she should).
While their marriage is on the fritz, we also have a love triangle between Milia, Marcus, and Andre. Andre is a detective played by Robert Christopher Riley, who we found out was dating Milia before she ended up with Marcus in college. I know the plot thickens. However, it gets better because it turns out that Jessica is on the run from the police because of neighborhood burglaries. Now, I am not one for cheating, but please step out with someone who is a regular person. So, for a quick review, Marcus slept with Jessica, a thief. Marcus wants to get back with Milia, but Milia wants her marriage to work. I know this is all unbelievable, but I was hooked for the entire time.
So, throughout the film, Jessica starts making her presence known; she steals Milia’s phone, uses Milia’s makeup products, leaves her hair in Milia’s loofa, steals her clothes, and murders the maid. Of course, Milia and Marcus look at it as a string of coincidences until the maid dies, and once that happens, it sets off the chain of reactions from all characters and finally reveals the major plot twist of the entire film.
Overall, the film had a new breath of writing, and it was interesting to see the man step out of the relationship and gain a stalker instead of the woman. I also believed that pairing Luckett with Bishop was a dynamic move because the two had a power couple aura about them. Halley also made the film her own in her character’s psychotic way of being this very unhinged stalker.
So, if you are into suspenseful thrillers and want to see how the movie ends, remember to check it out on the Bet+ app.
